July 20, 2009 Is Charlotte Economy turning the corner? From The Charlotte Observer In the first six months of the year, 446 new and expanding firms generated 7,316 jobs, up 15 percent over the same period last year, according to the report, released Thursday. Overall, though, the number of people with jobs in Mecklenburg County fell by more than 5,330 in the first five months of the year, according to state data. Still, the new jobs show the local economy is rebounding, and that "although the Queen City isn't quite in the clear, she certainly has turned the corner," the chamber said in its report. Local economists have said they believe the recovery will be slow, with unemployment remaining in double digits the rest of this year.
